Size mistakes are the most expensive part of a dumpster rental, and they go both directions. Order too small and you pay for a second pull. Order too large for heavy material and you hit the weight cap with the box half empty.

Start with material, not project size

Weight decides the answer for concrete, tile, soil and roofing. Volume decides it for cabinetry, furniture, drywall and packaging. Those two paths lead to different containers even on identical square footage.

A practical reference

10 yards: one small room, or heavy debris. 20 yards: kitchen plus bath, full garage, single-layer roof. 30 yards: whole-house cleanout, large deck removal. 40 yards: light bulky commercial volume.

When two smaller pulls beat one big box

Heavy material almost always. Two 10-yard pulls of clean concrete typically cost less than one overloaded 20 with tonnage overage.
