What Can and Cannot Go in a Dumpster

The prohibited list is not arbitrary. Facilities reject loads containing certain materials, and a rejected load becomes a returned container plus fees for everyone involved.

Accepted without question

Wood, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, furniture, mattresses, appliances without refrigerant, roofing, metal, concrete in a designated heavy container, and general household junk.

Never accepted

Paint and solvents, motor oil, pesticides, propane tanks, batteries, tires, asbestos-containing material, medical waste and anything flammable or under pressure.

Restricted but placeable elsewhere

Electronics, refrigerant appliances and fluorescent tubes need a separate stream. Orange County operates household hazardous waste collection centers that take these free of charge from residents.
