How to Dispose of Mattresses and Furniture in California
Bulky item rules, recycling programs and what actually happens to old furniture.
- Same-day delivery available
- Driveway protection included
- Transparent, all-in pricing
Mattresses and upholstered furniture cannot simply go to the curb in most Orange County cities, and illegal dumping citations are expensive. There are several legitimate routes.
Mattress recycling
California funds a statewide mattress recycling program, and participating collection sites accept them at no charge from residents. Steel, foam and fiber are all recovered.
Donation, when it is genuinely usable
Charities accept clean, structurally sound, stain-free furniture. Sagging particleboard and pet-damaged upholstery will be declined, so be honest with yourself first.
Container or haul-away for the rest
Furniture is bulky rather than heavy, so a 20-yard container swallows a surprising amount. For a handful of pieces, a single junk removal visit is cheaper than a rental.
